  • Fact Check: Bangladesh Players Did Not Wear Burqas While Playing Cricket; Viral Image Is AI-Generated Vishvas News’ investigation has found that the viral image of Bangladeshi players in burqas is not real. This image was created using the Gemini AI tool. By: Umam Noor - Published: Oct 16, 2025 at 11:42 AM - Updated: Oct 16, 2025 at 11:55 AM - New Delhi (Vishvas News). A picture from the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s ODI World Cup match between Bangladesh and New Zealand, played on October 10, is going viral on social media. In the image, two female players can be seen on the cricket field wearing burqas. Users are sharing the picture with claims that the Bangladesh players played wearing burqas. In its investigation, Vishvas News found that the players from Bangladesh did not play in burqas, and the viral claim is not real. The image was created using the AI tool Gemini AI, which is now being circulated with a false claim. What is in the Viral Post? On October 12, Instagram user ‘Mohammad Haroon Shah’ shared the viral post with the caption: “The veil is not an obstacle, but a protection for women, and these two Bangladeshi cricketers have shown this to the world perfectly.” An archived version of the post can be seen here. Investigation To begin our investigation, we first carefully observed the viral image and noticed ’’World Cup 2025’ mentioned there. Furthermore, the names ‘Jhelik and Supta’ were visible on the scoreboard’s player plate. Implying that, according to the claim, these were the Bangladeshi cricketers ‘Jhelik’ and ‘Supta’. Building on this, we proceeded with our investigation and performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. This search revealed the same image being shared with the same false claim on an X (formerly Twitter) handle on October 13. However, in this version, we noticed the Gemini AI logo at the bottom of the picture. It is noteworthy that Gemini AI is an online tool that can easily be used to create any kind of AI image, and anyone can create such images. Recently, the trend of creating ‘Ghibli and Nano’ images using Gemini AI went viral. However, according to experts, creating AI images in this manner can also be risky. A related Vishvas News article can be read here. Continuing our investigation, we reviewed the footage of the October 10 match between New Zealand and Bangladesh on Jio+ Hotstar. In none of the videos did we see any Bangladeshi players in burqas. The claim in the image identifies the players as ‘Jhelik and Supta’. We further investigated by searching for videos of ‘Jhelik’ and ‘Supta’ from the October 10 match against New Zealand on Hotstar. Our search found videos of both players uploaded on October 10. In these videos, both players are seen wearing the official Bangladesh cricket uniform. You can see Sharmin Akhter Supta at the 20-second mark and Rubya Haider Jhelik at the 38-second mark in this video. This can also be seen in the collage below. To gather more information about the viral image, we contacted Bangladeshi journalist Sajid Hussain Chowdhury. He informed us that the claim is completely false. According to a BBC report from October 10, the New Zealand team defeated Bangladesh by 100 runs in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Finally, we conducted a social scan of the Instagram user ‘Mohammad Haroon Shah’ who shared the fake post and found that the user has 363 followers. Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation has found that the viral image of Bangladeshi players in burqas is not real. This image was created using the Gemini AI tool.
