  • Last Updated on February 10, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that a fenugreek and spice mixture can completely eliminate all pain. We fact checked this claim and found it to be mostly false. The Claim A viral Instagram post claims that consuming a mixture of roasted fenugreek (methi), ghee, dry ginger (saunth), ajwain, poppy seeds (khus khus), and cinnamon (dalchini) twice daily with milk or water for a month will completely eliminate pain from any cause, including gout, arthritis, and injuries. The post guarantees results. Fact Check Can fenugreek and spice mixture cure all types of pain? Not really. There is no scientific proof that this mixture can cure all kinds of pain. Pain has different causes, including inflammation, nerve damage, or injury. There are sometimes psychological and social reasons too. Some of these ingredients (from the claim) have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but they do not provide a universal solution for pain relief. We spoke with Dr Almas Fatma, MBBS, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, General Physician from Navi Mumbai, for her take on fenugreek and spices for pain relief. She clarifies, “While fenugreek and spices like turmeric or ginger contain natural compounds that may help reduce inflammation and mild discomfort, they cannot cure all types of pain. Pain can have many causes—such as nerve damage, infections, or chronic conditions—that require proper medical attention. Relying solely on home remedies might delay an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It’s always best to consult a doctor if the pain is severe, persistent, or unexplained.” Does fenugreek help with pain? Maybe, but not as claimed. Fenugreek has been used for centuries in traditional medical systems. It contains compounds like flavonoids and alkaloids that may help reduce mild inflammation. Some studies suggest it could support joint health, but it does not cure conditions like gout or arthritis. There is no evidence to support the idea that consuming it daily will completely eliminate all types of pain for everyone. Can dry ginger and ajwain reduce pain? To some extent, yes. Dry ginger (saunth) is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and may provide mild pain relief. Ajwain (carom seeds) contains thymol, which has some analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. However, they work best as supportive remedies, not as a guaranteed treatment for chronic pain. On a related note, another post claims that applying a paste of potato and ginger can cure knee pain, but this is false. Do poppy seeds and cinnamon have pain-relieving effects? Yes, they may help some people. Poppy seeds (khus khus) contain alkaloids that may provide pain relief. The poppy plant also contains substances like morphine and codeine, known for their pain-relieving, calming, and sleep-inducing effects. These are often used in medicines for these purposes. However, the amount naturally present in poppy seeds isn’t strong enough to treat severe or chronic pain. While poppy seeds don’t naturally contain opium compounds, they can become contaminated during harvesting or if the plants are damaged by pests. Moreover, cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties, but its effects on pain relief are limited and not proven for all types of pain. A 2018 study showed that cinnamon helped reduce pain and swelling in women with rheumatoid arthritis. After 8 weeks (approximately 2 months, as opposed to 1 month in the claim), those who took cinnamon saw improvements in joint pain and tenderness. However, the study had limitations, including a small sample size (only 36 women) and no impact on other health markers like blood sugar or cholesterol. We still need more research to confirm these results. Is ghee beneficial for pain relief? Not directly. Ghee contains healthy fats that are beneficial for overall health, but there’s no strong evidence to show it reduces pain. Ayurveda suggests that ghee may help lubricate joints, but this doesn’t mean it can cure arthritis or pain from injuries. A 2024 study looked at how ghee might benefit bone and joint health. The study found that ghee’s healthy fats and vitamins could help reduce inflammation, improve joint lubrication, and support bone strength. Vitamins like D and K2 in ghee may also help with calcium absorption. While more research is needed, ghee could be a helpful addition alongside treatments for conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis. Can this mixture replace medical treatment? No, it cannot replace proper medical care. Chronic pain conditions like arthritis, gout, or nerve pain require professional treatment. Ignoring medical advice and relying only on this home remedy could worsen the condition over time. Pain management should be based on a proper diagnosis and treatment plan from healthcare professionals. We reached out to Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician, Holy Mission Clinic, New Delhi, for his expert opinion on whether home remedy can replace medical treatment. He says, “No, such mixtures cannot replace medical treatment. While some natural ingredients may offer temporary relief for minor issues, they don’t address the root cause of most health conditions. Serious illnesses often require proper diagnosis, medications, or other medical interventions. Delaying or avoiding medical treatment can make a condition worse. It’s important to see a doctor for any ongoing or severe symptoms.” Similarly, there are other claims that Harvard University declared the sujood posture the best remedy for back pain. However, this is not factually correct. THIP Media Take The claim that this fenugreek and spice mixture can completely eliminate all pain is mostly false. Some ingredients may offer mild relief due to their anti-inflammatory properties, but they are not a guaranteed cure. Pain from conditions like arthritis, gout, or injuries requires medical attention. Home remedies can be supportive, but they should not replace professional treatment.
