  • Last Updated on August 29, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media video claims that applying turmeric paste disappears pimples. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Half True. The Claim A YouTube video claims that turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help in fading the spot scars and making our skin glow. Fact Check What are the causes of pimples? Pimples result from a combination of factors including excess skin oil (sebum), clogged hair follicles, bacterial growth, hormonal changes (especially during puberty), genetics, diet, stress, and environmental factors. Medications and friction can also play a role. What is the difference between pimples and acne? Acne and pimples are often used interchangeably, yet there is a subtle distinction between them. A pimple is a small, raised bump resulting from blocked pores and may include redness, inflammation, and pus. Acne, on the other hand, encompasses a chronic skin condition involving pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and more. It stems from factors like hormones, excess oil, and bacteria, leading to various blemishes such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. While a pimple is a singular bump, acne comprises a range of lesions requiring comprehensive treatment. Can applying turmeric paste disappear pimples? To a certain extent. It is often claimed that home remedies can cure skin problems. However, it is always not the case. Applying turmeric paste may disappear or fade away pimples in some cases. But the effectiveness of turmeric paste in treating pimples can vary from person to person. Turmeric has been touted for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor effects. Even research published in 2016 indicates that a chemical named curcumin in turmeric may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health. Another article published in 2013 informs that curcumin has an antibacterial effect against the bacteria named Propionibacterium acnes which mostly causes pimples on the skin. These properties may help reduce redness, swelling, and bacterial growth associated with pimples. So, some individuals may experience improvements in their pimples by applying a turmeric paste directly to the affected areas. However, turmeric paste is not a miracle cure for everyone. Pimples can have various causes, such as hormonal imbalances, bacteria, clogged pores, or underlying skin conditions that turmeric paste cannot cure completely. While turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties may provide some relief to the symptoms associated with pimples, it might not address the root causes of acne. So, it is essential to maintain realistic expectations and consider a comprehensive approach to skincare, including proper cleansing, a balanced diet, and, if necessary, consultation with a dermatologist for more effective and personalized treatment options. This isn’t the first time we have found inconsistent claims that suggest home remedies can disappear pimples completely. We have previously debunked ice therapy cures pimples and toothpaste dries put pimples. What can be the side effects of relying solely on home remedies and not seeking proper medical treatment? Relying solely on home remedies and not seeking proper medical treatment can worsen the condition. Research shows that turmeric can cause allergies in some people. Evidence shows that some people are allergic to curcumin. Research published in 2015 shows that people allergic to curcumin can suffer from rashes due to contact dermatitis. Another research published in 2018 shows that turmeric can stain the skin yellow.
