  • Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi did NOT change attire after Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Karnataka; Viral pic is old An old photo of Rahul Gandhi was shared on social media with the false claim that he changed his attire after the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Karnataka. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This image of Gandhi is from his visit to Kashi Vishwanath temple during the 2022 UP assembly elections. It is not related to the Bharat Jodo Yatra. As the Congress party's Bharat Jodo Yatra passed through the BJP-ruled Karnataka, a post was circulated on social media claiming Rahul Gandhi changed to Hindu religious attire after reaching Karnataka. The post was shared with two photos of Gandhi. In the first photo which was allegedly shared from Kerala, Gandhi was wearing a t-shirt and pants. Whereas, in the second image, supposedly from the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka, Gandhi is seen wearing a white kurta with a Hindu prayer shawl and a rudraksha chain around his neck. He also had a red tika on his forehead. Priyanka Gandhi could also be seen behind the Wayanad MP in the photo. The images were shared with a caption in Malayalam which read, "You don’t need to be afraid of anything in communist Kerala because there is a Pinarayi government". AFWA found that while the first image is indeed from Bharat Jodo Yatra in Kerala, the second image showing the Congress leader in Hindu religious attire is old and not related to the Yatra. AFWA investigation With the help of a reverse image search, we found that Gandhi had worn the clothes seen in the first image during his padyatra in Malappuram and Wayanad districts of Kerala. Below are some pictures of Gandhi participating in the Yatra wearing the same attire. A reverse search of the second picture in the post confirmed that it is from Gandhi’s visit to Varanasi during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This picture was carried in a report by The Indian Express on March 4, 2022 with credits to PTI. As per this report, the image shows Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple after they arrived in Varanasi to campaign for the Uttar Pradesh elections. Other media organisations had also reported the photo as from Varanasi. Rahul Gandhi visits religious shrines in Karnataka On the fourth day of the Karnataka leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi visited a mutt, a mosque and a church in Mysore in a single day. On October 2, he also offered prayers at Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple, Nanjangud, Karnataka. Also, videos and images from the Wayanad MP’s padyatra in Karnataka confirmed that he had not changed his attire after entering the BJP-ruled state. Below is one of the videos of the Padyatra in Karnataka shared on Rahul Gandhi's YouTube page. It is hence clear that the photograph in question is from Gandhi’s visit to Kashi Vishwanath temple earlier this year. The senior Congress leader has not changed his attire for the Karnataka leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra.
