  • Fact Check: Empty seats in Delhi during PM's speech? Viral clip is MISLEADING The video showing empty seats was not recorded during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech. An edited audio was inserted into the viral clip. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video showing empty seats was not recorded during PM Modi’s speech. An edited audio was inserted in the viral clip. Ahead of the Assembly elections, did Delhiites snub Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally? A video of an empty venue going viral purports to show that. In the 40-second-long video of a huge ground with empty seats with Bharatiya Janata Party flags, Modi’s speech is audible, and he can be heard saying in Hindi, “Despite being a weekday, you have gathered here in huge numbers to bless us.” Sharing the viral clip on X, a user wrote, “Isse zyada log toh humara Twitter Space mein hi aa jaate hain” (We have more people than this in our Twitter Spaces),” and praised Delhi’s former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal saying, “Now we know why Modi is scared of doing rallies in Delhi.” The post’s archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral claim is misleading. The video was not recorded during PM Modi’s speech. An edited audio was inserted into it. OUR PROBE We found that PM Modi made the comment audible in the viral clip at a rally in Kartar Nagar’s Yamuna Khadar. We found its complete video on his official YouTube channel. It was live-streamed on January 29. In this video, the viral clip can be heard at 13 minutes and 40 seconds. The video then also shows a crowd present there in huge numbers, contrary to the viral claim. In the livestream, a banner featuring photos of Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda. This banner was not visible in the viral clip. A comparison can be seen below. The video of the PM's speech was live-streamed by several other news outlets. In these videos as well, many people can be seen sitting in the audience. EDITED AUDIO INSERTED IN THE VIRAL CLIP We also found that the audio of the PM's speech in the viral clip was also edited. The sentence, “This crowd is showing what Delhi's mood is,” said by the PM was omitted in the viral clip. It also makes it clear that the video going viral was not recorded during the PM's speech. While we could not independently ascertain when the viral clip was recorded, it’s more than clear that it wasn’t during PM Modi’s speech.
