  • Fact Check: Video showing women consuming alcohol is from Telangana, not Tamil Nadu A video of a group of women having a feast along with alcohol is in circulation with a claim that it shows women from Tamil Nadu boozing in a group. The post claims the women who are supposed to raise the children are involved in such culture. Claim :Women seen drinking alcohol in the viral video are from Tamil Nadu Fact :The video is from Telangana and was shot during Dasara A video of a group of women having a feast along with alcohol is in circulation with a claim that it shows women from Tamil Nadu boozing in a group. The post claims the women who are supposed to raise the children are involved in such culture. The video shows women enjoying themselves in community feasting, chatting with each other, and consuming alcohol with soft drinks. The claim in Hindi goes “तमिलनाडु: परिवार में महिलाओं की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका होती हैं। अगर महिलाएं ऐसी होंगी तो बच्चों का पालन-पोषण कैसे होगा।“ When translated, it claims: “Tamil Nadu: Women are supposed to play a major role in a family. If are like this, how will they raise the children” Fact Check: The claim is Misleading. The video is from Telangana and not from Tamil Nadu. When we searched using the key frames extracted from the video, we found a video uploaded on a YouTube channel named ‘Banjara Aswitha’. The video was uploaded on the channel in the form of a reel, first on October 25, 2023, with the caption “Dasara Dawath”. A longer version of the video was again posted by the same YouTube channel on November 4, 2023. In addition to these videos, when we searched other videos on the channel, we found another video that shows the same women in the same sarees dancing to the native tunes. The About page of the channel states that it belongs to a woman named Banjara Aswitha who belongs to a small village in Nagarkurnool, Telangana. She belongs to a tribe called Banjaras. We can see several videos published on this channel showing native traditions and culture. Therefore, the video showing a group of women indulged in a feast, accompanied by alcohol, is from Telangana and not Tamil Nadu. The claim is Misleading.
