  • Fact Check: Indore's Rang Panchami celebration peddled as crowded Hanuman Jayanti procession in Hyderabad Lakhs of people thronged the streets in the procession that stretched from Narsingh Bazaar Road square to Rajwada in Indore this year on March 12. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows visuals from a procession held on Rang Panchami in 2022 and 2023 in Indore. Following communal violence in West Bengal and Bihar during Ram Navami, the festival of Hanuman Jayanti was observed on April 6 with tight security across the country. In Hyderabad, elaborate security arrangements were made for the Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra with around 2,000 policemen deployed in the city to oversee the celebration. Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh was even reportedly taken into custody during the procession as a preventive measure. Now, a video supposedly showing a pompous celebration of Hanuman Jayanti in Hyderabad is making the rounds on social media. In the video, an enormous crowd can be seen swarming the streets, some with huge vehicles dispensing colours in the air — with no police in the vicinity. Archives of such posts can be found here and here. India Today found that this video neither shows a celebration of Hanuman Jayanti nor is it from Hyderabad. It shows Indore’s Rang Panchami celebration. Our Probe Reverse searching keyframes from the video led us to an Instagram reel shared on March 12, showing the celebration of Rang Panchami in 2023 — a festival which is celebrated five days after Holi, in Indore. This video is the same as the one going viral. We also found a video of the 2023 Rang Panchami celebration on the YouTube channel of News18 MP-Chhattisgarh. According to the report, the video showed people celebrating Rang Panchami on the streets of Indore’s Gair. While this place looked very similar to the one seen in the viral video, there were some discrepancies. The posters seen on the building in the second half of the viral clip were different from the ones seen in this video. They however matched with a photo on Alamy of a procession held in Indore at Rang Panchami 2022. Thus, we found that the viral video had visuals of Rang Panchmi celebrations from two consecutive years — 2022 and 2023. For more clarity, a comparison between the two and the viral clip can be seen below. Per reports, lakhs of people thronged the streets in the Gair procession that stretched from Narsingh Bazaar Road square to Rajwada this year on March 12. As per the website of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, every year Ranga Panchami is celebrated five days after Dulendi or Holi. During this festival, the local municipal corporation sprinkles colours mixed water on the main streets of old Indore. Earlier, they even used fire brigade vehicles for this purpose. Thus, a video of Indore’s Rang Panchami procession was peddled as a massive celebration of Hanuman Jayanthi in Hyderabad.
