  • Last Updated on August 26, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims Harvard university has confirmed fluoride in water damage the brain. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. The study referred to in the claimed social media post only suggests the correlation. It does not establish fluoride as a risk factor for brain damage. The Claim A Twitter post claims Harvard university has confirmed fluoride in water causes cognitive disorders and lowers IQ. Also, this post had 219 retweets and 630 till we last checked. Fact Check Does fluoride damage the brain? It depends on the amount. An article published in 2021 suggests fluoride may damage the brain. Even regular fluoride intake can cause medical conditions like dementia. Dr Abhishek Juneja, Consultant Neurologist in Delhi, focuses on the excess of fluoride content in drinking water and recommends parents to ensure boiled or RO water for their kids. This made us research on the amount of fluoride in drinking water allowed in India. The IndiaWaterPortal.org website informs the limit is 1.5 mg/L. Also, many states have content greater than 1mg/l. Fluoride is often considered toxic for human body. THIP MEDIA has shown that excessive long-term use of fluoride toothpaste can harm teeth. However, fluoride can damage organs, bones, nerve and muscle. So, there can be a possibility of fluoride affecting the Indian population. Does fluoride in water damage the brain? It is doubtful. We do not have scientific evidence to confirm fluoride in water supplies damages the brain. The claimed social media post has a basis in a study published in 2012 by a group of investigators. One of them works at the Harvard School of Public Health. This study only suggests the correlation between fluoride levels and children’s IQ. The paper nowhere shows how fluoride causes the differences in IQ scores. Another post also claims that fluoridated water can harm children’s brains or nervous systems.
