  • Sharing a graphic carrying a photo of Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra smiling with her daughter, social media users claimed that it shows the leader being cheerful while visiting the family of Radha, a tribal woman who lost her life in a tiger attack in Kerala's Wayanad on 24 January 2025. Those sharing this graphic, which carries Asianet News' logo, criticised Gandhi Vadra for her demeanour in the photo, as she appeared to be smiling and laughing while allegedly meeting with the kin of the deceased. (Archived versions of more claims can be seen here, here, here, and here) Is it true?: No, the viral claim is false. We could trace the photo back to May 2024, showing the leader shortly after she cast her vote during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Additionally, none of the visuals from her recent meeting with Radha's family show her cheerfully laughing. How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search on the photo in the viral graphic, which led us to an X (formerly Twitter) post shared by The Hindu on 25 May 2024. It mentioned that the photo showed Gandhi with her daughter Miraya, outside a polling station in New Delhi. Next, we copied the Malayalam text in the graphic, "കടുവ കൊന്ന രാധയുടെ വീട്ടിൽ പ്രിയങ്ക ഗാന്ധി" (Priyanka Gandhi at the house of Radha who was killed by a tiger) and ran it as a keyword search. This led us to the original graphic on Asianet News' Facebook page, which was shared on 28 January 2025 and showed a different visual. Asianet's report on Gandhi visit also carried this photograph, adding that locals had displayed black flags over the MP's late arrival. Another one of their reports showed Gandhi arriving at Kannur airport before meeting the deceased's family. Conclusion: An old, unrelated photo of Priyanka Gandhi is being shared to falsely claim that it shows her smiling while meeting the family of a deceased woman.
