| - Fact Check: Video showing stampede-like situation is not from Prayagraj where Mahakumbh Mela is underway
At least 30 people were killed and dozens more were injured during the stampede that took place at the Mahakumbh Mela
Claim :
Viral video shows heavy rush and a stampede-like situation at Prayagraj during Mahakumbh MelaFact :
The video is from January 1, 2025, and has nothing to do with Maha Kumbh MelaAt least 30 people were killed and dozens more were injured during the stampede that took place at the Mahakumbh Mela on January 29, 2025, as millions of Hindu pilgrims rushed to take the holy dip in the Sangam waters. Terming the January 29 stampede at the ongoing Mahakumbh “unfortunate”, the Supreme Court asked a public interest litigant who sought its intervention in the matter to approach the Allahabad High Court with his prayer.
“It’s an unfortunate incident, something which is of concern. But go to the High Court, there is already a judicial commission which has been constituted,” Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, presiding over a two-judge bench, told the petitioner, advocate Vishal Tiwari. Appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi submitted that the judicial commission had indeed been set up to inquire into the incident and that a similar petition had been filed before the high court too. Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has alleged that BJP’s double-engine government is hiding the real death toll of a stampede at Maha Kumbh mela in Parayagraj. The government reported 30 deaths and 60 injuries in the stampede, but the Opposition argued that the actual toll was higher.
"While the government is continuously giving budget figures, please also give the figures of those who died in Maha Kumbh. I demand an all-party meeting should be called to give clarification about the arrangements for Maha Kumbh." Akhilesh Yadav said.

Fact Check:
The claim is Misleading. An old video is in circulation linking it to the Mahakumbh Mela.
When we extracted the keyframes from the viral video and searched using Google reverse image search, we found that the video had been in circulation since January 1, 2025. An X handle named National Capital Delhi shared the same video tagging the location as Barsana Vrindavan. The caption on the video is ‘Barsana, Vrindavan on 1st January 2025’.
Barsana is the birthplace of Radha, while Vrindavan is the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. The Radha Rani temple is a historical temple and attracts a huge number of devotees throughout the year. It is an integral part of the Krishna pilgrimage circuit which also includes Mathura, Vrindavan, Goverdhan, Kurukshetra, and Dwarka. Barsana is famous for the grand Holi festival, known as the Lathmar Holi, and is also said to be the birthplace of goddess Radha. The town is constructed around two hills in the Braj region, Vishnu Hill and Bramha Hill.
Hence, the viral video is not from Prayagraj and is not related to Mahakumbh Mela. The claim is Misleading.
