  • A rumor circulating online in February 2025 claimed Transportation Security Administration agents and other law enforcement officials arrested Joy Behar, cohost of the ABC daytime talk show "The View," at an airport. For example, on Feb. 17, the manager of a YouTube channel named ScandalScoop posted a video (archived) titled "Joy Behar ARRESTED at Airport Trying to Flee the Country After $50M Lawsuit — Karoline Leavitt Reacts!" That clip received more than 1.6 million views in just three days. However, the rumor that TSA and other law enforcement officials arrested Behar was false. A spokesperson for "The View" said, "There is no truth to the story." Not only did no one arrest Behar, but the dozens of YouTube videos users shared to spread the rumor all featured editing, narration, thumbnail images and possibly other elements generated by artificial intelligence. The stories told in the clips also did not specify where or when any such arrest supposedly occurred. Further, a Google search returned no articles confirming Behar's arrest. Behar appeared on "The View" on Feb. 17, 18, 19 and 20. The ScandalScoop clip displayed an AI-generated thumbnail image showing a fake quote from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, reading, "Joy! Now rot in hell b****." The image also depicted Behar with her hands behind her back as two men in sunglasses detained her, as well as a photo of hands in handcuffs and an "arrest warrant" document under a judge's gavel. Users commenting under the ScandalScoop video and other clips indicated that they believed someone truly had arrested Behar. The fictional story of Behar's arrest The text description telling the fictional story claimed Leavitt filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Behar after Behar "made a highly controversial remark" about her. In turn, Behar supposedly "booked a one-way flight to Italy" to flee the U.S.: As the legal battle intensified, Joy Behar realized that things were spiraling out of her control. Sources claim she became increasingly paranoid, convinced that she was about to be financially ruined and publicly disgraced. That's when she allegedly hatched a plan to flee the country before the legal system could catch up with her. According to reports, Behar booked a one-way flight to Italy, her ancestral homeland, in a last-ditch effort to escape the potential financial ruin looming over her. However, what she didn't expect was that federal authorities were already onto her. As she attempted to board her flight, TSA and law enforcement intercepted her at the airport, leading to her shocking arrest in front of stunned onlookers. Passengers at the airport described the scene as pure chaos, with some even capturing videos of Behar being escorted away in handcuffs. Security officials later confirmed that she was detained on suspicion of attempting to evade legal consequences. The footage of her arrest quickly spread online, sending social media into a frenzy. Despite the story's claims, no videos of Behar's arrest exist online because the arrest never occurred. The text of the story also showed signs of AI generation, according to the AI text detectors GPTZero.me and ZeroGPT.com. The fact checkers at Lead Stories also published similar findings, including the AI-generated elements and the lack of evidence supporting the claims that Leavitt sued Behar or that authorities arrested Behar. A number of false and purportedly satirical rumors exist online in regard to "The View." For example, first lady Melania Trump did not win a $900 million lawsuit against the show, nor did billionaire Elon Musk sue "The View" and cohost Whoopi Goldberg for $80 million.
