A viral post shared on Facebook claims Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney has purportedly “resigned in disgrace.”

There is no evidence supporting the claim. Romney recently announced he would not be seeking re-election in 2024, however, according to The Associated Press.

Romney reportedly referred to former President Donald Trump as an “idiot” ahead of his first impeachment trial, according to his upcoming biography, “Romney: A Reckoning,” Insider reported. Romney also purportedly made comments about his Republican colleagues, Sens. Ted Cruz, J.D. Vance, and Josh Hawley, according to an excerpt from the book published by The Atlantic, Vanity Fair reported.
“BREAKING: Mitt Romney has resigned in disgrace!! Another RINO bites the dust!” the Facebook post, which has received over 2,000 likes, purports. The post does not provide a source to support the claim.
The claim is false. Romney has neither released a statement on his website nor his verified social media accounts announcing his purported resignation. Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting the Republican Utah Senator had plans to resign. If the claim was actually true, multiple media outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have.
Although the claim is false, Romney recently did make a major announcement regarding his political future. The Republican Utah Senator said he would not be seeking re-election in 2024, according to The Associated Press. Romney will retire at the conclusion of his current term in 2025, the outlet reported.
Romney shared a video to X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, announcing he would not be running for re-election on Sept. 13.
In the video, Romney explained that at the end of another potential term, he would be in his mid-eighties, and as a result, it’s time for a younger generation of Republican leaders to step in and “shape the world they will be living in.”
