A video showing several people cleaning up a polluted river is going viral online to claim that it this initiative was taken by newly elected Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The claim also praises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was taking this initiative.
How did we find out the truth?: We found a reply on the same viral post shared by an account 'Earth Warrior'.
The reply stated that this video shows their team of volunteers cleaning the Kalindi Kunj Ghat in Delhi and that it dates back to 2024.
The account shows several other videos and posts about clean-up drives.
Taking a cue, we looked for their official Instagram page and found the same viral video shared on 29 December 2024.
The creation and publication of this video predate the Delhi elections, where the BJP won.
We also did not find the group's affiliation with any of the political parties.
Further, we also performed a relevant keyword search that led us to several reports about this particular volunteer group's work.
This group was started by Pankaj Kumar, a man from Bihar who often roams around Delhi with a mask attached to a can which carries a plant to spread awareness about the increasing pollution.
We spoke to Kumar who clarified that this video is from 29 December 2024. "We are not affiliated with any political party or organisation. We are a volunteer group working for river rejuvenation since 2019," he added.
Conclusion: An old video of volunteers cleaning Yamuna river ghat in Delhi is being falsely credited to BJP.
