Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While the city witnessed heavy rains, the viral video is from May 2021 when Cyclone Tauktae hit Maharashtra. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued Yellow and Orange alerts for different parts of Maharashtra from September 15 to September 19. Predictably, heavy rains in several areas, including Mumbai, led to some waterlogging. Amid a plethora of photos and videos of the downpour shared by people on the internet, a dramatic video of water pounding on the walls of the Gateway of India has started making the rounds. Such was the fury of the waves, the monument appeared to be floating in the turbulent waters. The sound of strong winds could also be heard in the background. This somewhat apocalyptic video was supposedly shot on September 16, 2022. The archived version of one such post can be found here. AFWA found that this video is not recent. Rather, it shows a 2021 cyclone that hit Maharashtra. AFWA Probe Reverse searching the frames of the video took us to a News18 report that featured similar visuals. According to it, multiple videos of waves thrashing the Gateway of India started going viral on the internet when Cyclone Tauktae hit Maharashtra in May 2021. Categorised as an “extremely severe cyclone storm”, Tauktae reportedly claimed at least six lives in the state. We also found the video in question shared on YouTube by a news outlet called “NS NOW” entitled, "Gateway of India Mumbai in Taute Tufan. Cyclone Tauktae, NS NOW". Per news reports, while the main structure did not suffer any damage, a sea-facing safety wall and iron gates near the Gateway of India were destroyed in this incident. Apart from that, the cyclone also displaced some jetty stones in the vicinity and upon subsiding, left heaps of garbage on the premises. While it did rain in Mumbai on September 16, 2022, the viral video was shot last year. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
