| - Moldovan lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday reducing presidential powers despite more than 5,000 people rallying in support of the country's newly elected pro-European leader. Maia Sandu is due to take office in late December as leader of the ex-Soviet republic after winning a surprise victory over pro-Russian incumbent Igor Dodon last month. The new legislation transfers control of the the country's intelligence agency from the president to parliament. Sandu and her supporters say the goal is to reduce the role of the presidency before she takes office and to boost parliament, where the opposition is outnumbered by Dodon's supporters. Opposition lawmakers did not participate in the voting, chanting "Shame!" and "Down with the mafia!" inside parliament. Images from inside showed lawmakers coming to blows after the legislation passed. Lawmakers passed several other bills, including one granting official language status to Russian. Moldova has close historical ties with neighbouring Romania and they share a common language. Earlier on Thursday protesters gathered outside parliament after Sandu called for supporters to rally against the bills tabled by Dodon's Party of Socialists, which she branded a "usurpation of power". Sandu's supporters chanted "Down with the traitors!" and demanded the dissolution of parliament. Police cordoned off the building but did not interfere with the rally. At the protest, Sandu called for the resignation of Dodon's government, which she said had "supported his corrupt schemes", and for early parliamentary polls. "We need a good country for all decent people. We need snap elections to kick the thieves out of power," Sandu said. The last parliamentary election was held in 2019 with Dodon's party securing a third of the seats. During his four years in power, Dodon enjoyed the strong backing of Moscow and supported closer ties with Russia. Sandu promised during the campaign to battle corruption in the country of 3.5 million people, which is one the poorest in Europe. ag-acl-emg/mm/jxb
