  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: At least 183,707 people have died worldwide and more than 2.6 million infections (2,636,740 cases in all) have now been reported in 193 countries or territories, according to an AFP tally at 1100 GMT Thursday based on official sources. The United States has the most deaths of any country with 46,785. Italy is the second hardest-hit country, with 25,085 dead. Spain follows with 22,157, then France with 21,340 and Britain with 18,100. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautions the struggle is far from over. "Make no mistake: we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time," he says. "Most countries are still in the early stages of their epidemics. And some that were affected early in the pandemic are now starting to see a resurgence in cases." The leaders of the European Union are due later Thursday to sign off on a 540-billion-euro ($584-billion) emergency package and discuss plans for a European Recovery Fund. Speaking to lawmakers in Berlin ahead of the meeting, German Chancellor Angela Merkel encourages bloc unity. "In the spirit of solidarity, we should be prepared to make completely different, that is to say significantly higher contributions to the European budget over a set period". Analysis firm IHS Markit releases a purchasing manager's index (PMI) and says the eurozone economy is suffering an "unprecedented" collapse. "The extent to which the PMI survey has shown business to have collapsed across the eurozone greatly exceeds anything ever seen before in over 20 years of data collection," it says. It says the service sector has taken the brunt of the hit, with hotels, restaurants and travel-related firms faring the worst. China announces it will donate another $30 million to the WHO to help fight the pandemic. US President Donald Trump announces he has partially suspended immigration to the United States, with the aim of keeping foreigners out of local jobs during the crisis. Germany announces human trials for a vaccine will start by next week. It is the fifth trial authorised worldwide and a "significant step" in making a vaccine "available as soon as possible", the country's regulatory body says. In Britain, Oxford University launches its human trial of a potential vaccine with the ambitious aim of making a successful jab available to the public later this year. Peru will release under amnesty about 3,000 prisoners including those who are particularly at risk from the pandemic, the justice minister says. burs-paj-eab/jmy/pma
