The famed Lauberhorn downhill at Wengen has been omitted from the 2021/22 season by the Swiss ski federation after a row over finances with local organisers that now involves the Court of Arbitration for Sport. "Swiss-Ski cannot meet the financial demands of the Wengen organising committee," the federation said in a statement Wednesday. "By withdrawing Wengen from the long-term FIS (international ski federation) calendar, Swiss-Ski is taking its responsibilities." National federations must nominate resorts to FIS to be included in their calendar. "For the federation, the objective is to ensure that attractive World Cup races can take place in Switzerland, including on the Lauberhorn, in good economic conditions," Swiss-Ski added. The Lauberhornrennen, comprising downhill, slalom and combined races, have been traditionally held in January since 1930. They are among the best-attended winter sports events with tens of thousands of spectators flooding into the Bernese resort that lies in the shadow of the Eiger mountain. rg/lp/gj
