  • Top officials for the EU and UK will meet in Brussels on Thursday as both sides seek to resolve a row over customs checks in Northern Ireland. The talks come as a wave of rioting has raised fears that fallout from Brexit is contributing to a threat to the fragile peace in the British province. European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic and UK Brexit minister David Frost will have an "informal" meeting to "take stock of ongoing technical work on the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland", an EU spokesman tweeted on Wednesday. They will also "provide a political steer for both teams on outstanding issues", said the spokesman, Daniel Ferrie. Included in the Brexit divorce deal, the protocol is designed to prevent the emergence of a "hard border" between Northern Ireland, which remains part of the United Kingdom, and its EU neighbour, the Republic of Ireland. The special arrangement shifts customs and regulatory checks to Northern Irish ports on goods arriving from mainland Britain, effectively keeping the UK region within the EU's customs orbit. Britain angered the EU when it breached the terms of the protocol by delaying the customs check until October and Brussels began legal proceedings against London over the issue. In a letter this week to the EU, Britain said it would respond to the lawsuit in mid-May. Officials said the meeting on Thursday would not cover the lawsuit and would instead take stock of the technical talks over the Irish border question. "The discussions so far have been constructive but there are still significant differences that need to be resolved," a UK government spokesperson said. "Both the UK and EU are continuing to engage with business, civil society and other stakeholders in Northern Ireland to understand the issues they are facing," the spokesperson added. The border issue has proved a major flashpoint for Northern Ireland communities loyal to Britain with rioting breaking out between pro-UK unionists and pro-Ireland nationalists. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney meanwhile will travel to London on Wednesday to meet the UK's Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis, who held urgent talks with regional leaders in Belfast last week in an effort to reduce the tensions. arp/rmb/jv
