  • Iran's Persepolis maintained their perfect record in the Asian Champions League when they thrashed India's Goa FC 4-0 on Friday in Margao, India. Their four-match winning streak so far in Group E means they are now five points ahead of the UAE's Al Wahda, against whom they will have to avoid a defeat on Monday to confirm qualification with one match to spare. Persepolis, the runners-up in 2018 and 2020, had just about managed to beat Goa 2-1 when they clashed earlier in the week but on Friday left nothing to chance with a commanding display. The Iranian giants opened their account through Shahriar Moghanlou who scored past Goa goalkeeper Naveen Kumar in the 24th minute after midfielder Amarjit Singh lost possession of the ball. Mehdi Torabi made it 2-0 a couple of minutes before the break from the penalty spot following goalkeeper Kumar's foul on Isa Alekasir inside the box. Alekasir himself got on the scoresheet two minutes after the resumption as he grabbed a long cross from Moghanlou and slotted the ball home after charging into the penalty area. Goa's defeat was complete in the 58th minute with Kamaleddin Kamyabinia blasting the ball into the net following a corner. Earlier in the same group, Al Wahda beat Al Rayyan 1-0 to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout phase alive. Omar Khribin scored off a penalty late in the second half against Laurent Blanc's Qatari side who were left with nine men following red cards for Ahmed Maqsoud and Franck Kom. For Rayyan, it was their third loss in four matches as they remain bottom of the group behind debutants Goa with just one point. In Group B, Iran's Tractor FC edged out Iraq's Air Force Club 1-0 for their first win to breathe life into their campaign. Mehdi Tikdarinejad scored in the second minute after Air Force Club goalkeeper Fahad Taleb had parried a shot from Peyman Babaei into his path. Air Force Club were left with just 10 men shortly before the break following a straight red card for Maytham Jabbar who brought down Babaei when the striker was through on goal. The win took Tractor FC's tally to six points to keep their hopes of a last-16 spot alive while Air Force Club stayed on two points after four matches having still not scored a single goal. Meanwhile, the race for the top spot in Group D appeared to be going down to the wire with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr and Qatar's Al Sadd both grabbing their second wins of the competition. Al Nassr edged past Iran''s Foolad Khuzestan 2-0, while 2011 champions Al Sadd accounted for Jordan's Al Wahdat, also with a similar scoreline. Abdulfattah Asiri and Abderrazak Hamdallah scored for Al Nassr in the second half in Riyadh to go top of the group with eight points. Also in Riyadh, former Arsenal player Santi Cazorla put Al Sadd ahead with a 13th-minute penalty before Ali Asadallah put the result beyond doubt with an 89th minute strike. Al Sadd now have seven points and will have to make the best of their remaining two matches in a format where only the group winners gain automatic qualification for the knockout phase. str/dj
