The Facebook group Widzialna Reka ("Visible Hand") for example started as a way for friends to offer each other psychological support but now boasts 80,000 members and offers any and all kinds of help. "People offer to get groceries for those who can't leave the house or make lodging available for those forced into quarantine. They lend out their cars and offer online content for children, language and yoga lessons or dog-walking services," said founder Filip Zulewski. "I launched the group after I myself felt some fear and anxiety when I saw the empty streets," the 44-year-old university teacher told AFP. Like other countries around the world, the EU member of 38 million people -- which has registered 251 confirmed cases of COVID-19 including five deaths -- has shut down its borders and closed schools, among other precautionary measures to stem the spread of the virus. Many restaurants, which have been forced to suspend their sit-in service but can still provide takeaway, have been contributing free meals for charity volunteers to distribute across the country. The Warsaw-based Little Chef cooking school for children for its part has since last week been preparing a daily 50 litres of free soup for the elderly, sick or poor. It has also been providing daily free meals to emergency doctors at a local hospital, thanks to crowd-funded donations, according to the school's pr manager Iga Pietrusinska. bo-amj/pma
