  • Here is a weekly roundup of developments in the coronavirus crisis: India, the United States and Brazil are the three countries which have recorded the greatest number of new cases over the past seven days, with 67,615, 41,327 and 37,059 cases respectively per day on average, according to an AFP count on Friday at 1100GMT. While there is an improvement in the United States, with 11 percent fewer cases than the previous seven-day period, and Brazil (six percent down), the situation has deteriorated in India with a seven percent increase over the previous week. Next in line come three Latin American countries -- Colombia (9,757 per day), Argentina (8,486) and Peru (7.848), followed by Spain (7,371). The number of confirmed cases only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with countries having differing counting practices and levels of testing. Italy is the country where the number of cases is picking up most, with its average of 1,118 new cases per day representing a 102 percent rise, the biggest such jump among countries recording at least 1,000 cases per day on average over the past week. France, with 4,242 daily cases, saw a 45 percent rise followed by Argentina (33 percent, 8,486,) and Spain (27 percent, 7,371). At the other end of the spectrum, the biggest drops have taken place in South Africa (-32 percent, 2,620 new cases per day), Bolivia (-26 percent, 1,009), Bangladesh -23 percent, 2,369) and Colombia (-15 percent, 9,757). There was a 15 percent pick up in the number of cases in Europe, compared to the previous seven-day period, and a five percent increase in Asia. There was a decrease in Oceania of 20 percent, in Africa (-12 percent), in North America (-11 percent), Latin America and the Caribbean (- four percent), and in the Middle East (- two percent). At the global level the pandemic is more or less stable, at minus one percent, with an average of 251,557 new cases per day. India registered the most deaths over the pat week (6,606), followed by the United States (6,349), Brazil (6,345), Mexico (3,488), Colombia (2,285), Argentina (1,533), and Peru (1,243). The pandemic has killed 832,257 around the world since late December, out of more than 24.5 million confirmed cases. The United States has recorded the highest number of deaths with 180,844, followed by Brazil with 118,649, Mexico with 62,594, and India with 61,529. bur-rap/jmy/pvh
