The Vatican gave the go-ahead earlier this month for an investigation into Edward Janiak after the release of a documentary detailing abuse cases that he allegedly covered up as bishop of the central city of Kalisz. Francis appointed Archbishop Grzegorz Rys of the city of Lodz as apostolic administrator, a temporary post. The National Catholic Reporter's Vatican correspondent Joshua McElwee described it as "a rare step". Janiak will stay on as bishop of Kalisz while the probe is carried out. The film "Hide and Seek", which has been watched more than seven million times on YouTube, tells the story of two brothers who were victims of abuse by a priest who acted with alleged tacit protection from Janiak. The documentary is the second in a series by independent journalist Tomasz Sekielski, who has said he will next look into Saint John Paul II's alleged inaction on abuse. John Paul II, who was pope from 1978 to 2005, was Polish and played a pivotal role in the country's transition from communism to democracy. He still commands huge respect in Poland. Sekielski's first documentary "Tell No One", released in May 2019, has been viewed 23.8 million times on YouTube and has sparked a national discussion on abuse by clergy. The sexual abuse of children by clergy is a subject that has long remained taboo in the predominantly Catholic country.
