  • Russian officials in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok on Friday unveiled memorial plaques honouring rare visits to the country of reclusive North Korean leaders. The state-run TASS news agency said that the plaques were mounted on the building of the Vladivostok railway station which saw the arrivals of North Korean leaders travelling in armoured trains. Russia and North share a border and have close diplomatic relations. Konstantin Shestakov, deputy head of the regional administration, hailed the "landmark" event honouring Kim Jong Il and his son Kim Jong Un's Russia visits. In April, 2019 Kim Jong Un arrived by train to Vladivostok for his first talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. His father Kim Jong Il visited Russia three times, including in 2011 when he held talks with then President Dmitry Medvedev in the east Siberian city of Ulan Ude. "All these visits laid a firm foundation for the development and strengthening of friendly ties and good-neighbourly relations with our region," Shestakov was quoted as saying. Stalin's Soviet Union played a key role in the North's foundation after it and the US decided to split the peninsula into two zones either side of the 38th parallel following the World War II surrender of Korea's colonial overlord Japan. as/jbr/lc
