AFP's fact-check service debunks misinformation spread online. Here are some of our recent articles on false claims in the United States: Social media users in America say that companies falsely accused of rigging the presidential election against Donald Trump were also employed in Myanmar, where the military cited alleged vote irregularities to justify a coup. But the claims are baseless; images and a watchdog group make clear that voting and counting was done by hand in Myanmar, and the election technology firms say their equipment was not used there. A post spreading on social media claims that wearing face masks to help stop the spread of Covid-19 will cause children physical and psychological problems. But medical and psychological experts say the claims it makes about masks are false, and the post is part of a larger disinformation campaign. Social media posts claim that discussion platform Reddit shut down the "wallstreetbets" forum responsible for driving a spike in the stock prices of companies including GameStop. But the forum is still active, and a Reddit representative said it was not closed but rather set to private by its moderators to manage a surge in traffic. Social media posts claim billionaire investor Warren Buffett donated $58 million to Joe Biden's campaign, linking this to the Democratic president's decision to revoke the Keystone XL oil pipeline permit. But US Federal Election Commission records do not show direct contributions by Buffett to Biden's 2020 campaign, and his assistant said he did not make any. 1. 2. 3. 4. afp
