  • Second week memories at Roland Garros: Day 8 -- Alexander Zverev said he "should not have played" after his last 16 loss to Italian teenager Jannik Sinner and complained of feeling "completely sick". Zverev, 23, was up to date with his tournament-mandated Covid-19 tests, the French tennis federation (FFT) said. However, they added that the German "did not consult the tournament doctors before his match". The US Open runner-up raised questions over whether he should have been allowed to play when he told reporters he had a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) following his win over Marco Cecchinato on Friday. "I am completely sick after the match with Cecchinato in the night. I can't really breathe, as you can hear by my voice," Zverev said after his Roland Garros exit. "I had fever, I'm not in the best physical state. To be honest, I shouldn't have played." Twenty-four hours later, Zverev announced that his latest Covid-19 test was negative. Day 9 -- Novak Djokovic admitted he suffered an "awkward moment of deja vu" after unintentionally hitting a ball which smashed into the head of a line judge in the first set of his last-16 win over Russia's Karen Khachanov. The incident happened as he stretched for a forehand and the ball flew off the frame of his racquet before spearing into the unsuspecting baseline judge sitting nearby. His heart-stoping moment came just weeks after Djokovic was defaulted at the US Open for swiping angrily at a ball which hit a female line judge, standing just behind him, in the throat. "My gosh, it was very awkward deja vu. I'm actually trying to find the linesperson and see if he's okay because I saw he had a little bit of a bruise, like redness, in that place in the head where the ball hit him," said 33-year-old Djokovic. Day 10 -- Rafael Nadal reached his 13th Roland Garros semi-final with a straight sets win over Italian teenager Jannik Sinner but claimed it was "dangerous" to finish at 01:30 in the morning when the temperature had plummeted to 12 degrees (53F). Nadal, the 12-time champion, defeated 19-year-old Sinner 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-1 to clinch a 98th victory in his 100th match at the French Open. "I know footballers play under these conditions, but they are all the time moving," said Nadal after the latest ever finishing match at the tournament. "We stop, we come back, we stop on the changeovers. I think this is a little bit dangerous for the body with these very heavy conditions." Day 11 -- Djokovic said he was "feeling okay" after overcoming neck and shoulder troubles to defeat Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals. "I definitely didn't feel great coming onto the court today, a few things happened in the warm-up," said Djokovic. "I had some neck issues and some shoulder issues. I don't really want to get too much into it. Day 12 -- Iga Swiatek arrived at the French Open puzzling over whether her future was on a tennis court or inside a university lecture hall. But, having stormed into the final at Roland Garros, school may be out permanently for the 19-year-old, the first Polish woman to make the championship match in Paris since 1939. "Right now it's going to be hard to make a decision to go back to studying because I feel like really I can achieve big things. I just want to focus on that," said Swiatek, who reached her maiden final at the Slams by easing past Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska 6-2, 6-1. Day 13 -- Stefanos Tsitsipas went down in five sets to Novak Djokovic in a semi-final just six minutes short of four hours and despite the clock ticking closer to midnight, the Greek delved deep into why he plays the sport. "Losing keeps you in the same place, in the same spot, which is why I hate losing. Of course, I think everyone hates losing. It's weird if you don't hate losing. But I guess a loss is a very good lesson where life puts a stop at what you're doing. You can reflect on that. You can grow," he told media. Day 14 -- Polish teenager Iga Swiatek won her country's first Grand Slam singles title as she defeated American fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1 to become the youngest women's French Open champion since 1992. The 19-year-old Swiatek, at 54 the lowest-ranked woman to capture the Roland Garros title in the modern era, said: "It had to be like that, that another underdog won a Grand Slam in women's tennis. It is so often right now that it is crazy." Day 15 -- Rafael Nadal demolished Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to win his 13th French Open and equal Roger Federer's all-time record of 20 Grand Slam titles. For world number one Djokovic, the defeat ended his hopes of an 18th Slam and of becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors twice. Nadal, 34, claimed his 100th match win at Roland Garros against just two defeats since his 2005 debut. "It's been a very tough year. Winning here means everything to me so it's not about equalling Roger on 20, for me today it's just a Roland Garros victory." afp
