  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis. Three of the four authors behind a large-scale study in The Lancet that raised safety fears over the use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 retract their paper. The study suggested the drug could increase the risk of death among COVID-19 patients. On May 25, following the publication, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it had temporarily suspended the trials of the drug, later resuming them. The pandemic has killed at least 387,280 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally at 1900 GMT on Thursday, based on official sources. The United States is the worst-hit country with 107,685 deaths, followed by Britain with 39,904, Italy with 33,689, Brazil with 32,548 and France with 29,065 fatalities. In Latin America, which has become the new COVID-19 hotspot, Brazil sees a record daily death toll. The European Central Bank dramatically boosts aid for eurozone economies, adding 600 billion euros ($674 billion) to its emergency bond-buying scheme, which now totals some 1.35 trillion euros. The ECB says the eurozone economy will see a sharp contraction of 8.7 percent this year, but predicts a rebound in 2021 and 2022. Austria scraps entry checks at its frontiers except with Italy. Spain says it will reopen land borders with France and Portugal on June 22. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, backs the development of "a people's vaccine" for COVID-19 that is available to everyone. He is speaking at an online meeting for global vaccines alliance Gavi at which governments around the world pledge $8.8 billion to help immunisation programmes disrupted by coronavirus. Jordan announces it will lift most restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, with mosques, restaurants and churches allowed to reopen from Saturday. The US trade deficit jumped more than $7 billion to $49.5 billion as both US exports and imports dropped by a record amount in April. Compared to March, exports of US goods and services fell more than 20 percent or $39 billion to $151.3 billion, the lowest level in 10 years. North of the border Canada's trade deficit widened to Can$3.3 billion (US$2.4 billion), from Can$1.5 billion in March, led by a drop in shipments of motor vehicles and parts after the pandemic shut down the auto sector. The NBA's board of governors approved a return-to-play plan, paving the way for the league to resume in Florida from July 31 following a three-month coronavirus shutdown. Under the plan 22 basketball teams will be based at a single location -- Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando -- to minimise the threat of COVID-19. Games will be played without spectators. burs-fm-ang-jmy/har
