The towering waves left around 18,500 people dead or missing, while radiation unleashed by the Fukushima nuclear plant forced the evacuation of tens of thousands and left areas uninhabitable even a decade later. AFP journalists, including some who reported in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, have been back to the region to examine the impact and legacy of the tragedy.
