  • British Olympic swimming star Adam Peaty won the 50m breaststroke at the European Championships on Saturday for his third gold at the tournament and described his performance as "outstanding". Peaty, 26, had already won gold in the 100m breaststroke -- a discipline in which he is the Olympic champion -- and mixed 4x100m medley relay events in the Hungarian capital. On Saturday, he sped to victory in 26.21 seconds. "I don't want to sound arrogant, but that was an outstanding swim," Peaty told the BBC. Peaty later told reporters: "It was almost perfect execution. If I can do these times in the 50m, it looks very promising for my other races and for the future." Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus was second in 26.55 while Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi claimed bronze in 26.68. Dutch swimmer Femke Heemskerk won the women's 100m freestyle in 53.05 sec ahead of Marie Wattel of France and Britain's Anna Hopkin. "I'm crying. This is my first individual gold medal. I was working a lot for this event, I'm the oldest in this field but I have a motto: never give up," said the 33-year-old who now has a total of 18 European medals. It was a memorable day for teenagers in Budapest. Anastasia Gorbenko, 17, became Israel's first European champion winning the 200m medley from Abbie Wood of Britain and Hungarian star Katinka Hosszu. "What an incredible feeling. I didn't believe that I could do it or be as successful in the senior competition as a Youth Olympic champion," said the Israeli. Italy's Benedetta Pilato set a new world record for the 50m breaststroke in the semi-finals. The 16-year-old clocked 29.30 seconds to better the previous best of 29.40sec set by American Lilly King in 2017. Pilato won world silver in the event behind King in Gwangju, South Korea, in 2019. The 50m breaststroke, unlike backstroke and butterfly over the same distance, is not a race included in the Olympic Games. Saturday's podiums Women 100m freestyle 1. Femke Heemskerk (NED) 53.05, 2.
