  • The two runners-up in the first round of Ecuador's presidential election on Friday asked the country's electoral body for a vote recount to determine which one of them will contest a runoff. Environmental lawyer Yaku Perez and right-wing ex-banker Guillermo Lasso finished neck-and-neck in the race for second and third place in Sunday's vote. Pre-election polls had placed Lasso comfortably in second place. First place went to young leftist economist Andres Arauz, but he did not earn enough votes to avoid a second-round runoff set for April 11. "Our proposal is that this (electoral) process be suspended until a recount is given in the 24 provinces" of the country, Perez said at a meeting with Lasso at the headquarters of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in Quito. CNE head Diana Atamaint, other council members and international election observers were present at the meeting. Perez, a prominent indigenous leader who claims there was wrongdoing in the first round, said a recount would offer a chance "to demonstrate to the country that there is no fraud, that the electoral process was transparent." Hundreds of indigenous Ecuadorans rallied in support of their candidate Thursday. Lasso said he supported Perez's proposal. Perez, a 51-year-old environmental lawyer, has been given 19.38 percent of the vote, just behind conservative Lasso, 65, who got 19.74 percent. With 99.96 percent of the votes counted by Friday, the 36-year-old Arauz -- a protege of former socialist president Rafael Correa -- remains in the lead with 32.7 percent. Atamaint told journalists the request for a recount must be considered at a special CNE meeting, taking into account technical, legal and budgetary considerations. "Unfortunately this situation has occurred and generates doubts among citizens," she said, insisting the council has "nothing, absolutely nothing to hide." Incumbent President Lenin Moreno's term in office ends May 24. He did not seek re-election. Ecuador's finance ministry has said it will have "the necessary economic resources" for a recount. pld/sp/mlr/sst
