  • FACT CHECK: Did A News Outlet Report On A Florida Man Kidnapping A Scientist To ‘Make His Dog Immortal’? A photo shared on Threads allegedly shows a news headline that reads “Florida man kidnaps scientist to make his dog immortal.” Post by @terrierp.burnsView on Threads Verdict: False This is not a genuine news article. It originates from a site that categorizes some articles as “memes and satire news.” Fact Check: A man was arrested in Florida on Friday after allegedly stealing a car and hitting a police officer with it, according to New York Post. Police pursued the man in a chase that led to a swamp, the outlet reported. An alleged news article has a headline that reads, “Florida man kidnaps scientist to make his dog immortal” and shows a mugshot allegedly depicting the man. “I WOULD NOT CONVICT,” the caption reads. This is not a genuine news article, however. There are no credible news reports matching the headline. The screenshot appears to stem from a site called The Mother of All Nerds. Check Your Fact could not locate a satire disclaimer on the site, but there is a category titled “MEME Nerds and Satire.” This particular story is labeled “Nerd News.” (RELATED: Was A Florida Man Charged With A Hate Crime For Ruining A Pride Crosswalk?) The mugshot is not related to the alleged story. It appears to stem from an article from an outlet based in Miami, Florida called Local 10 News and covers a man charged with domestic battery after throwing a banana at his girlfriend’s head. This claim has also been debunked by Snopes. Check Your Fact reached out to spokespeople for The Mother of All Nerds and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received from either source.
