A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a tweet by Irum Azeem Farooque, a former member of the Provincial Assembly of Pakistan. The tweet from July 2022 contained a screengrab from the viral video and stated that it showed a man from Orangi, Karachi.
Using this clue, we ran a keyword search that led us to a report by 24 News HD, a news website based in Lahore. The report from July 6, 2022, was about a father who thrashed his child for disturbing him while he was sleeping. The report also carried a screengrab from the viral video.
Further, we found another report that stated that Ismail, a father of three, tortured his eight-year-old son in the Pakistan Bazaar area of Karachi. The man’s wife Jamila said that he had physically abused her and their three children for 11 years. The man was reportedly arrested by Orangi Town Police after the video of child abuse went viral.
We searched the Karachi Police’s Twitter account for information and found a tweet from July 6, 2022, about the arrest of Ismail Ould Ibrahim. It contained a photo of two police officers and Ismail with his face blurred out.
Geo TV also reported the incident stating that the name of the minor victim was Asad. Thus, it is more than clear that a video of a father thrashing his minor son in Pakistan was shared with a misleading communal spin.
