  • Did Moroccans set fire to a factory in Turkey in this video? No, that's not true. The video is of a blazing fire in a popular clothing market in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The claim appeared in a video (archived here) where it was published on TikTok by @lion_syria on August 21, 2023, under the title "Breaking News. Moroccan youths set a factory on fire in Turkey after a Moroccan man was murdered by the Turks". (Translated from Arabic by Lead Stories) This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing: (Source: TikTok screenshot taken on Fri Sep 1 09:20:55 2023 UTC) The claim was shared by different accounts on TikTok, like here and here. On August 14, 2023, a 57-year-old Moroccan man lost his life in Istanbul after being attacked by a taxi driver, according to the Turkish media outlet CNN Türk. During the fight, he [the Moroccan man] fell to the ground, hit his head on the ground, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died there. (Translated from Turkish by Leadstories) CNN Türk reported on the incident on August 18, 2023. While some TikTok accounts shared a video claiming that Moroccans had ignited a Turkish factory following this incident, a Google Reverse Image search revealed that the video actually originated from Bangladesh during a fire at a clothing market in Dhaka. On April 4, 2023, Al Jazeera released a report titled "Massive fire guts popular clothing market in Bangladesh capital," alongside images and videos depicting the fire, which were similar to those shared in this TikTok video. Furthermore, had the claim been genuine, it would have held significant importance and garnered extensive coverage from Turkish media channels. Lead Stories conducted a Google News Search in Turkish, utilizing their database of numerous credible news sources, yet no factual reports on the claim were found.
