The viral screenshot is fake. Arvind Kejriwal never made such a post.
The Enforcement Directorate issued its third summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appear before the agency on January 3, 2024, concerning the excise policy scam case. Kejriwal, who skipped the first two summons on November 2 and December 21, now faces increased scrutiny.
Amid this, a screenshot of an alleged 2012 tweet by Kejriwal, criticising corrupt political leaders for evading ED and CBI summons, was widely shared on social media. Allegedly in 2012, Kejriwal condemned political leaders who refused to appear before enforcement agencies, yet remained in their posts with impunity.
Several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders among others shared the viral post, making cutting remarks at Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party. Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva also issued a statement to a news agency based on the alleged post by Kejriwal.
One such post read, “I agree fully with self-certified kattar honest Arvind Kejriwal ji, that it is shameful for corrupt leaders to avoid ED/CBI summons. Dear chameleon champion, please request Shri Arvind Kejriwal to appear before ED, visit Vipassana later.”
India Today found that the viral screenshot is fake. Kejriwal never made this post.
Our Probe
With the help of the date and keywords in the viral screenshot, we ran an advanced search on X to look for the alleged post on Arvind Kejriwal’s official. However, the search did not produce the post in question. Here is a screengrab of all the posts that he made on November 24, 2012.
Upon careful observation, we noticed that Kejriwal’s alleged post contained 257 characters. Until November 2017, the maximum character limit for a post was only 140. This hinted at the post being fake.
On further searches, we came across a clarification posted on X by AAP Delhi’s social media head Amanpreet Singh Uppal, who called the viral screenshot fake.
We also googled to search if any such post was made by Kejriwal then. Had he made the post, it would likely have been reported or discussed. But we found no credible news reports.
Thus, it’s clear that a fabricated screenshot is being shared with misleading narratives after ED summoned Kejriwal for the third time.
