| - In early 2025, a screenshot spread widely online that purported showed an X post from tech billionaire Elon Musk announcing he would suspend the accounts of users on the social media platform who protested U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.

Social media users posted the image on platforms including Threads, Bluesky, Facebook and X. Although many users appeared to believe the post was legitimate. some questioned the image's authenticity, replying to posts with comments like, "Nope fake I think."
A search of Musk's X account found no such post. Snopes found only one version of this screenshot with a time stamp — dated 12:02 a.m. Jan. 29, 2025. However, a search of archived captures of Musk's X page dated between Jan. 28 and Jan. 30 found no evidence he ever posted about suspending anti-Trump accounts.
No reputable news outlets have reported on this purported post, which would have occurred if it were real because of its newsworthiness. Additionally, there was very little variation in the images of this supposed screenshot shared online, suggesting it was a single edited image that spread rather than a post that was screenshotted by multiple people before deletion. Thus, we rate this claim as a fake.
Musk characterizes himself as a "free speech absolutist." While his critics say he buckles to government censorship and engages in activities contrary to his spoken values, Musk has said X is "the only major platform that doesn't censor beyond what is legally required" and that he will not suspend or take other action on accounts "on the left" due to his support of free speech.
