  • Fact Check: Prop-Uganda! Honduran paratroopers' crash FALSELY shared as Ugandan army blooper A video of a botched paratrooper landing allegedly shot during Uganda's Independence Day celebration went viral on social media. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows Honduran Air Force paratroopers crash-landing because of strong winds during the Central American country’s Independence Day celebrations in September. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni fired his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba from the position of infantry commander on October 4 after the latter repeatedly made social media threats to invade Nairobi, the capital of neighbouring Kenya. In its aftermath, a video of a botched paratrooper landing allegedly shot during Uganda’s Independence Day celebration went viral on social media. The video saw a number of paratroopers landing inside a packed stadium — all of whom crashed spectacularly into the crowds. A tweet sharing this video read, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the Ugandan Military paratroopers as seen on Uganda’s independence celebrations on October 9, 2022. Kenyans must be very afraid, because this is the army whose former commander, the President’s son, threatened to invade Nairobi!” Archives of such posts can be found here, and here. AFWA found that this video is not from Uganda, or from the African continent at all — it’s from Honduras in North America. AFWA Probe A reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to a Facebook video from September 16, 2022. Taken from a different angle, this video showed the failed landing of one of the paratroopers from the viral video. This proves that the video is not from this year's Independence Day celebration in Uganda, which is held on October 9, annually. We also found this video shared by Cadena Radial del Centro, a Honduras-based radio station, on its Facebook page the very same day. Its caption in Spanish roughly translates to, “Accident that occurred yesterday in the national parades when a paratrooper from the Honduran Air Force lost control and touched the ground in the stands of the Tiburcio Carias Andino National Stadium in Tegucigalpa”. Subsequent searches led us to a CNN report about this incident that shared another video of the same incident shot from a different angle. On September 15, 2022, a parachuting show was held at the José de la Paz Herrera Uclés National Stadium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, as part of celebrations of the country’s 201st Independence Day. During this period, some of the Air Force paratroopers reportedly landed abruptly because of heavy winds. We compared the screengrabs of the viral video with photos from the stadium and found them to be similar. Another media report added that one of the 40 paratroopers who participated suffered a fracture as gusts of wind swept him outside the sports arena. He was hospitalised. Thus, it’s more than clear that a recent incident from Honduras was falsely shared as an example of the incompetency of the Ugandan military forces.
