India Today Fact Check
This is a year-old incident that took place in Nebraska, US, in 2022.
Amid violent unrest in France following the tragic shooting of a teenager by police during a routine traffic check in Nanterre, social media users are sharing a video a family getting caught in a large burst of fireworks. Those sharing the video claimed that this was the incident that triggered the French riots. “This is video of before #FranceRiots they are now intentionally targeting peace people,” read a tweet. Its archived version can be seen here.
India Today, however, found that the viral video is old and has nothing to do with the French riots. This incident took place in Nebraska, US, in 2022.
Our Probe
A keyword search led us to a news report that contained the viral video. The report, dated July 9, 2022, stated that the catastrophic event took place during fireworks display on the occasion of the American Independence Day.
Per the report, a family in Nebraska, US, were partying at home and preparing to enjoy the fireworks display. However, unexpectedly, the fireworks ignited and shot in all directions.
The family disclosed that they were worried about the nearby vehicles if they were damaged. Anticipating the owners might want to file an insurance report, they sent the video of the incident to them. One of those owners sent the video to their brother, who they posted it on Reddit.
We came across another video report about the incident on the News Nation YouTube channel. The channel reached out to the family, who confirmed that there were no injuries or property damage.
Thus, an old video from the US was falsely linked to the ongoing unrest in France.
