  • Fact Check: This massive landslide occurred in China, NOT Greece or India India Today found that this video shows a landslide that occurred in the Sichuan province of China on March 27, 2023. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This incident occurred on September 27 in China’s Sichuan province. Elias, a powerful storm that was the second one to hit Greece in the span of a month, has devastated central parts of the country. Floods and landslides have so far led to the death of at least 17 people. A video of a massive landslide, allegedly from Greece, is now being widely shared on social media. However, while some claimed that the video was from Greece, others alleged that it was from India. The archived versions of two such claims can be seen here and here. India Today found that this video is neither from Greece nor from India. It shows a March landslide in the Sichuan province of China. OUR PROBE In response to the viral tweets, we noticed that people pointed out that this incident happened in China. Subsequently, we ran a keyword search and found that the viral video was shared on Twitter by American meteorological news outlet AccuWeather on September 30, 2023. Per the tweet, the incident took place on September 27 in China’s Chongzhou city. The video has been attributed to “Newsflare via Reuters Connect”. We found the longer version of the footage on the official YouTube channel of Newsflare. As per Newsflare, this incident took place in Chongzhou, located in the Sichuan province on September 27. No casualties or vehicle damages were reported. Authorities reportedly quickly responded, enacting temporary traffic restrictions, and barring all vehicular traffic from the area. This incident was also reported by multiple Chinese-language media outlets. Some such reports can be seen here, here, and here.
