The confusion didn’t last too long and Meloni immediately shook hands with the Indian Prime Minister. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently made her first state visit to India on March 2, 2023. Soon after she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in Delhi, an image of both counterparts was shared widely on social media with some surprising claims. If the claims of some of the social media users are to be believed, then the Italian prime minister shied away from Modi's plea for a handshake, rather she folded her hands in 'Namaste’. The image is being widely shared with the claim that PM Modi's Italian counterpart refused to shake hands with him. A user called Meloni's act an insult and wrote, "Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni refuses to shake hands with Narendra Modi. It seems she's giving back 'sanskaar' to a 'sanskaari'." While sharing this image, several netizens, including Congress leader Alka Lamba, took a jibe against PM Modi. An archived version of the tweet can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found the claims to be false. The picture was taken when Italian PM Meloni folded her hands while PM Modi offered his hands for a handshake. Seeing Modi offering his hand, Meloni immediately shook his hand. AFWA Probe A keyword search on the internet led us to various videos and news reports containing the same shot. On March 2, 2023, a video was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Doordarshan National. In the video, Modi can be seen greeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Rashtrapati Bhawan where she received a ceremonial welcome. At the end of the ceremony, PM Modi took her to the car to bid goodbye. At the 7.42-second timestamp of that video, PM Modi can be seen offering a handshake to his Italian counterpart while Meloni folded her hands in 'Namaste'. This awkward moment, however, was over in the blink of an eye, as Meloni immediately shook hands with the Indian Prime Minister. The same video was uploaded on various YouTube channels, including Sansad TV, PMO India, The Indian Express, and Midday India on the same day. As per the news, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni received a Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhawan. She was the Chief Guest at the 8th edition of the Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi. The visuals of the event can be found on the YouTube channel of the news agency ANI. Thus, the image misses the complete picture and was shared with a misleading claim.
