  • Last Updated on November 2, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick take A social media post claims that durian increases libido. We fact checked it and found the claim to be mostly false. The Claim A Facebook account by the name awakened world posted a video suggests that durian, often referred to as the “king of fruits,” has the potential to enhance libido. Fact Check What does libido mean? Libido refers to an individual’s sexual drive or desire for sexual activity. It is a key aspect of human sexuality, influenced by factors like hormones, stress, and emotional well-being. Libido levels can vary widely among individuals and may fluctuate due to physical, psychological, or relationship-related factors. A healthy libido is essential for a satisfying sexual life, but what’s considered normal can differ greatly among people. What is a durian? A durian is a tropical fruit known for its distinctive odour, often described as strong and pungent. It has a spiky outer shell and soft, custard-like flesh on the inside. Durians are native to Southeast Asia and are often called the ‘king of fruits’ in the region. While some people find its taste and smell appealing, others consider it unpleasant. Durian is rich in nutrients and is used in various culinary dishes, desserts, and snacks in Southeast Asian cuisine. Can the consumption of durian increase libido? There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that durian is an aphrodisiac or increases libido. An aphrodisiac is a substance that is believed to increase sexual desire or arousal, but the effects of such substances can vary from person to person and are often based on cultural beliefs or anecdotal evidence rather than scientific research. Durian is a tropical fruit known for its strong odour, which some people find unpleasant. It is rich in nutrients and has a unique taste, but its consumption is not generally associated with increased sexual desire or arousal. Can any food increase libido? Some foods may have the potential to influence libido indirectly by improving overall health and well-being. For example, foods rich in certain nutrients, like zinc and omega-3 fatty acids, can support sexual health. However, there are no foods that can guarantee a significant and direct increase in libido for everyone. Libido is influenced by a combination of physical, metabolic, psychological, and emotional factors, making it complex and highly individualised. Dt Harita Adhvaryu Sr. Clinical Dietitian Ezcure Diabetes Care Ahmedabad Gujarat says, “Durian actually has happy chemicals to make you feel good. It contains the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that induces feelings of happiness and relaxation. This might be the reason where many traditional medicine practitioner connected it with the libido theory. But even if it may help lift up your mood, durian doesn’t improve your libido significantly, it contains many vitamins and minerals that are great for your overall well-being.” Nutritionist Priyanka says, “Durian is a very nutritious fruit rich in energy, protein, fat, fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C, and antioxidants. All these nutrients help to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. It also has lowest glycemic index which makes it ideal fruit for diabetes. But use of durian for increasing libido has not be scientifically proven.”
