  • Fact Check: Not storm-hit Tinsukia in Assam, this clip shows a powerful tornado in Myanmar This video of a massive storm supposedly wreaking havoc in Assam's Tinsukia was shared by many on social media. Turns out, it was from thousands of kilometres away. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video does not show storm-hit Tinsukia. It shows a rare and powerful tornado that hit Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar. A terrifying video supposedly showing the storm-hit Tinsukia district of Assam has been making the rounds on social media. In the video, the violent storm can be seen damaging houses and nearly uprooting trees. Archives of such posts can be found here and here. On April 24, schools and colleges in Tinsukia were shut following severe thunderstorms and hailstorms that ravaged the district that weekend. At least two people reportedly died in the Doomdooma area of the district, around 37,200 people in 54 villages were affected by severe storms. But does the viral video, show this deadly storm? India Today, in its investigation, found that this video captured a powerful tornado, thousands of kilometres away in Myanmar. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to its extended version in a news report about the deadly tornado that hit central Myanmar. The video reportedly shows a tornado that hit Naypyitaw on April 21 this year. Naypyidaw, officially spelt Nay Pyi Taw, is the capital of Myanmar. Per a news report by the Associated Press, a rare, big tornado tore through two villages near the capital city in central Myanmar, destroying more than 200 houses and claiming the lives of at least eight people. Per a local charity organisation, the tornado hit the Aung Myin Kone and Tadau villages on Naypyitaw’s southern outskirts at around 6:10 pm on April 21. Reportedly, more than a hundred people were transported to hospitals. Two Buddhist monasteries, a small clinic, and around 230 houses were reportedly destroyed by the tornado that blew for approximately 40 minutes. Several media outlets in Myanmar also shared the viral video of the tornado around the same time. Thus, it’s clear that the viral video shows the destruction caused by a storm in Myanmar and not Assam’s Tinsukia.
