AFWA's investigation found this video was shot way back in 2013 during a protest in the country. It had nothing to do with the recent protests. AFWA PROBE A reverse search of the keyframes from the viral video took us to a YouTube video from May 6, 2013. A United Kingdom-based news outlet, Channel 4 News, uploaded this clip. "Bangladesh riots: Islamist hardliners fight with police", the caption of the video said. The description of the video further noted that Islamic hardliners engaged in a fierce battle with the police demanding an anti-blasphemy law. Subsequent searches led us to a report in The New York Times published on May 6, 2013. The report mentioned that clashes took place on May 5, 2013, in the capital city of Dhaka. This resulted in the death of at least 22 people. Per the report, three security officers were beaten to death while a dozen other people were killed, including protesters shot by the police. A CNN report further said that activists of a radical Islamic organisation named Hefazat-e-Islam blocked nearly all the roads leading into Dhaka, pressing a list of demands including the anti-blasphemy statute. The same video was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of The Telegraph on May 6, 2013, confirming that this clip was nearly nine years old. Thus, we can safely conclude that the viral video does not show recent violent protests in Bangladesh against the massive fuel price hike.
