  • Last Updated on July 9, 2024 by Neelam Singh Quick Take The Claim In his Instagram video, ramane.aarya27 suggested that boiling cumin, fennel, and lemon and drinking it each morning on an empty stomach could reduce bloating, reduce flatulence, help in weight loss, and promote clearer skin. Fact Check What is the herbal drink the claimant is talking about? The claimant mentions making and drinking herbal drink every morning on an empty stomach. This drink includes cumin (jeera), fennel (saunf), and lemon, and involves boiling the ingredients. Do saunf, jeera and lemon decoction help reduce bloating? Some people believe that herbal drink containing fennel seeds, cumin seeds, and lemon can ease bloating and digestion, thanks to their carminative properties. A claim was studied from as early as 2013, which said cumin extract has the potential to reduce bloating and flatulence. More recently, in 2021, fennel seed powder was studied for its beneficial effects on various gastric issues. However, while these ingredients individually show promise in promoting digestive health, scientific research specifically addressing their combined effects on reducing bloating remains limited. It’s important to note that individual responses may vary, and these drinks should be a part of a holistic approach to maintaining digestive and overall health, alongside a balanced diet. Regarding lemon’s role in reducing bloating, there is a lack of specific research linking it to this benefit. While lemon is often present in such beverages for its refreshing taste and potential antioxidant properties, its direct impact on digestive issues like bloating requires further investigation. We asked Dr Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician, Holy Mission, Clinic, New Delhi about the above claim. He replied “While a decoction made from jeera, saunf, and lemon is common to help reduce gas and bloating due to their traditional carminative properties, it is important to note that scientific studies do not fully support these claims as a proven medical treatment. While some people may find relief with this natural remedy, it is crucial to approach it with caution. For individuals with sensitive stomachs or underlying digestive issues, this decoction could potentially cause discomfort or exacerbate symptoms. Please do not fall for these claims, it may work for some, but it may not work for everyone.” Can the combination of saunf, jeera and lemon drink help in weight loss? There is no direct evidence to suggest that a drink combining fennel seeds (saunf), cumin seeds (jeera), and lemon aids in weight loss. While each ingredient may offer individual health benefits—such as improved digestion and potential antioxidant effects—scientific studies linking this specific combination to weight loss are lacking. Weight loss is primarily achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle factors. Incorporating such drinks may complement a healthy regimen but should not be relied upon as a sole method for losing weight. Dietitian Kamna Chauhan clarifies that relying solely on a blend of cumin, fennel and lemon is insufficient for weight loss without modifying diet and exercise habits. She encourages that achieving a healthy weight involves an algorithm where 80% is diet and 20% is exercise. Does this same decoction help improve skin? As we mentioned earlier, the main benefit of these drinks for the skin is their high water content. Drinking plenty of water helps the skin by flushing out toxins and improving its texture. Fennel, cumin (jeera) and lemon can each be good for the skin on their own, but there isn’t much scientific evidence to prove that combining them offers extra benefits. The idea that drinking a mixture of cumin, lemon, and water can significantly improve skin health lacks strong scientific support. We also checked with Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. He informed, “While there is no research supporting the claim that a fennel seed and cumin drink can directly contribute to flawless skin, the components found in these ingredients may have topical applications that could potentially benefit the skin. The primary heroes in this regard, is water and lemon. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps filter toxins from the body, which is beneficial for both overall health and skin condition.” Disclaimer: Medical Science is an ever evolving field.
