  • Fact Check: Not Gaza! This horrific hospital bombing video is from Syria India Today found that the video is more than seven years old and from Aleppo, Syria. It has nothing to do with the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video dates back to July 16, 2016. It shows an attack on the Omar bin Abdul Aziz Hospital in Aleppo, Syria. Following the Hamas attack on October 7, Israel's response has led to thousands of deaths in the Gaza Strip. A video now circulating on social media purports to show a missile attack on a Gaza hospital. The video comprises CCTV footage showing explosions and destruction within hospital rooms, presumably resulting from a rocket strike. "#Gazabombing Actually attack in hospital is like strangulation of humanity... have some mercy. The war should be tactically different and not an open human genocide,” read one X post containing the video The video was shared on Facebook as well. An archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is more than seven years old and from Aleppo, Syria, and not the Gaza Strip. OUR PROBE A reverse image search of its screengrabs led us to a higher-resolution version of the same video on the video-hosting website BitChute. The clip was titled, “This isn’t the first time Israel has bombed a hospital.” According to the timestamp visible in this video, it was recorded on July 16, 2016. This proved that the video had no connection with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. We then found that on October 20, 2023, journalist Fared Al Mahlool from Syria shared this video while criticizing Russia and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. He wrote, “Over the course of this decade, Russia and the Assad regime bombed and destroyed many hospitals in Syria and killed thousands, and now they say they condemn those exact actions. This is a video from one of the many hospitals they targeted in Syria.” We noticed the logo of AMC with some Arabic text in the original video. We ran these through Google Lens and found out that this video belonged to the Aleppo Media Center. Aleppo is a city in Syria. With a subsequent advanced keyword search in Arabic, we came across the original video uploaded to the YouTube channel of AMC on July 31, 2016. The caption of this video translated to, "Moments documenting the crime: The air strike that targeted Omar bin Abdul Aziz Hospital in mid-July.” According to a November 2016 Washington Post report, the Omar bin Abdul Aziz Hospital in Aleppo was a target of bombing raids. At the time, Doctors Without Borders said this was the thirtieth attack on an eastern Aleppo hospital since government-allied forces besieged the area in July 2016. Hence, it becomes abundantly evident that an old and unrelated video from Syria was shared as a hospital bombing in Gaza.
