A video claiming to show a stampede at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh has gone viral on social media, featuring people running in panic. Some users are falsely linking it to a recent stampede in Maha Kumbh. Vishvas News investigation revealed that the viral video shows an accident that occurred in Pakistan in January and has no connection to Maha Kumbh. The UP Police has also registered a case regarding the spread of this misleading claim. What is in the viral post Facebook user ‘Munesh Kumar‘ posted this video on January 31 (archive link), with the caption “Stampede in Maha Kumbh.” Investigation To verify the viral claim, we first analysed the video carefully and noticed Urdu text on a shop sign, raising doubts about its authenticity. We extracted the key frames of the video and conducted a Google Lens search. Our findings led us to a Facebook post by user ‘Ikram Bin Abdul Jabbar’ on January 29, which stated that the video features an accident after the brakes of the container failed at Kirk Ambri Chowk. Another Facebook user ‘Sharab jinan’, on January 11, mentioned that it had been reported. The user’s profile also includes a Pakistan-based contact number. Additionally, news coverage of the incident can be found on Pakistan’s YouTube channel ‘ETV 247 URDU’, dated January 11, 2025. According to a video report uploaded on Geo News’ YouTube channel on January 11, 2025, 10 people lost their lives in the accident, while 15 have been injured. On February 19, the UP Police’s X handle posted the video, confirming that it originated from Pakistan. They also stated that legal action is being taken against social media handles sharing this misleading video. According to a news published on Dainik Jagran’s website on January 30, about 30 people lost their lives and over 60 were injured in a stampede at the Sangam banks during the Maha Kumbh before Mauni Amavasya. Dainik Jagran’s crime reporter Tara Gupta in Prayagraj, confirmed that the video is not from Prayagraj. The Mela police have registered a case against social media accounts that shared the misleading video. Lastly, we scanned the Facebook profile of the user who shared the misleading video and found that the user lives in Aligarh and has around 32000 followers.
