Quick Take
In a video on social media, a man reviews another video of a man with loose skin who is doing exercise. In his review, referring to loose skin, the man claims people should focus on fat loss and not weight loss to avoid saggy skin. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Half True. The man with loose skin was fat and lost many kgs, which made his skin saggy. Saggy skin during weight loss depends on many factors which are discussed below in the story.
The Claim
In a video on Instagram, a man reviews another video of a man with loose skin doing exercise. In his review, referring to loose skin, the man claims people should focus on not fat loss and not weight loss to prevent saggy skin.
Fact Check
Is the claim made in the Instagram video correct?
It does not seem so. We ran a Google reverse image search on a few keyframes of the claimed video. It took us to a YouTube reel which shows the man with loose skin was already fat and lost several pounds, which made his skin saggy.
The skin has a natural tendency of returning to its original state. But it loses elasticity after reaching a certain extent which is the case with the man exercising in the claimed video.
Why does skin sag?
Skin sag when chemicals like collagen and elastin reduce and permanently deteriorate the skin elasticity. Loss of fat often cause saggy skin.
In general, skin sag when people don’t try to lose weight gradually or don’t focus on building muscle. Also, not eating a balanced diet can damage the skin elasticity, which alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking can exacerbate.
Just as some weight loss methods can lead to unexpected health outcomes, home testing methods may also result in misinformation about one’s health.
While exploring the physical changes associated with rapid weight loss, it’s essential to also consider how environmental factors, such as disease outbreaks, can affect overall public health and individual well-being.
Is fat loss better than weight loss?
It seems so. There is not much difference between fat loss and weight loss. Losing fat provides many long-lasting and consistent results, which might not be the case with weight loss. Fat loss is specific and takes time to show a change on the weighing scale. But weight loss refers to an overall change in weight from muscle, water and fat loss, which can happen quickly.
Dietician Priyanka says, “Healthy weight loss means fat loss. Excess of anything is bad. Keep body fat in check as too much fat can cause diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, PCOS, fatty liver, back pain, knee pain, etc.”
