  • A circulating video purportedly showing police escorting burqa-clad women out of a venue amid the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections has raised concerns about voter fraud. However, a thorough fact-check reveals that the video in question is not recent. See the video being shared here with a claim that a burqa-clad woman was caught casting a fake vote. It reads: “Sayema’s Burqa clad sister was caught casting a fake vote! Do(es) they need Hijab or Burqa to carry out such illegal activities ? (sic)”. Sayema’s Burqa clad sister was caught casting a fake vote! Does they need Hijab or Burqa to carry out such illegal activities ? — Ashwini Shrivastava (@AshwiniSahaya) April 19, 2024 FACT CHECK Digiteye India debunked one such claim during the 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Using the InVID tool, we took key frames of the video being shared now and conducted a Google Reverse Image Search. This led us to a post from X dated February 15, 2022, which clarified that the footage originated from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. (@Spoof_Junkey) February 15, 2022 Further search on Google News revealed that the news report was filed by Live Hindustan and Dainik Bhaskar, showing that the incident occurred during the second phase of polling for Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, on February 14, 2022. According to official statements cited in the reports, two burqa-clad women, later identified as Muskaan and Rani, were apprehended while attempting to cast fake votes at GRPG College in Rampur. One of them succeeded in casting a fraudulent vote before she was caught. District Election Officer Ravindra Kumar told the media that a case had been registered against the offenders. Hence, the claim that two burqa-clad women were trying to cast fake vote in 2024 Lok Sabha elections is false. Claim: Video shows burqa-clad women trying to cast fake vote in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Conclusion: The video does not depict recent event but rather an incident from February 2022 when two burqa-clad women were caught while casting fake vote in 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
