  • Fact Check: Apocalyptic video of dead fish is NOT from chemical spill after train crash in Ohio, US A train accident in the United States, which has been compared to both, the Bhopal gas tragedy and the Chernobyl disaster, has been widely discussed on social media. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from the coast of Laguna del Plata in Santa Fe, Argentina. Reportedly, these fish died as a result of the drop in the oxygen level in their natural habitat. A train accident in the US, which has been compared to both, the Bhopal gas tragedy and the Chernobyl disaster, has been widely discussed on social media. On February 3, a train heading from Pennsylvania to Illinois derailed in the village of East Palestine in Ohio, releasing the hazardous material it was carrying into the air and the ground. Despite reassurances from government officials that the area’s air and water quality remains safe, and there was no large-scale contamination, there have been reports of residents allegedly experiencing nausea, headaches, and animals falling sick in the accident’s aftermath. Many on social media have been raising concerns about the toxic chemical spill. Among such posts was a video of thousands of dead fish that had washed up to a shore. People claimed that this video was from Ohio and showed the consequences of the accident. The archived versions of such posts can be seen here, here and here. AFWA found that the video is from the coast of Laguna del Plata in Santa Fe, Argentina — not the US. AFWA Probe Using reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded to multiple YouTube channels as early as January 22, 2023. This confirmed that the video predates the train derailment in Ohio. As per these channels, the video was from Laguna del Plata in Argentina’s Santa Fe province. A further search with relevant keywords led us to multiple media reports in Spanish that had used the same video and screenshots from it. According to these reports as well, the video was from the coast of Laguna del Plata in Argentina. Per the reports, thousands of dead fish appeared on the shore of Laguna del Plata on January 21. Reportedly, the fish died because the oxygen level in the water dropped due to high temperatures and lack of rainfall. Similar videos and images from Laguna del Plata were shared on Facebook by people from Santa Fe during the last week of January. Reportedly, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said that the chemical spill resulting from the derailment killed around 3,500 small fish across different streams in Ohio. It is, however, clear that the video in question is from Argentina, and it predates the Ohio incident. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
