  • FACT CHECK: Does This Photo Show House Democrats Vacationing In Italy? An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows Democratic members of Congress vacationing in Venice, Italy. Verdict: False A delegation of House Democrats actually posed for this photo in Ghana on July 28 while on a diplomatic trip, during which they also visited Vicenza, Italy. Fact Check: “House Democrats vacationing in Venice Italy, staying in five star hotels and dining out, all on our tax dollars,” alleges the image. The photo actually shows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the Congressional Black Caucus in Ghana. The 14-person delegation, which included House Majority Whip James Clyburn, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Karen Bass and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, met with the Ghanaian president and other government officials over several days. Pelosi posted the photo on her official Twitter account July 28, the same day it was taken, a spokesman for Pelosi confirmed to The Associated Press. To @RepCummings with love from Ghana, where we’re solemnly observing 400 yrs since the first enslaved Africans arrived in America. Thank you Elijah for fearlessly speaking truth. pic.twitter.com/tEz266LI3U — Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) July 28, 2019 They traveled to Ghana on an official government trip to mark the 400th anniversary of the first African slave ships arriving in America. On July 31, the Democrats visited the Ghanaian Parliament, where Pelosi became the first U.S. House Speaker to address the Parliament. They also toured Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, two historical sites connected to the slave trade. The delegation visited Italy on July 27 as part of their trip, but their destination was not Venice. It was Vicenza, where they met with top military commanders at the U.S. Army Africa headquarters.
