  • On June 16, 2024, the X account @LyricVault made a viral post suggesting that Joy, a character from Pixar Animation Studio's movie "Inside Out" voiced by Amy Poehler, is a confirmed lesbian in the sequel "Inside Out 2." According to the post: Pixar has confirmed that Joy from 'Inside Out' is canonically a lesbian. (Lyric Vault/X) As of this writing, the post had garnered more than 4.4 million views. Many social media users believed the assertion was real, with one user commenting under the post, "I had no idea they confirmed it! That's so cute." Another follower on the account suggested that they already knew the character was gay: "We didn't need it confirmed, we know 😍" However, the post lacked any truth. @LyricVault is a satire and parody account on X that offers the following disclaimer: "All content is satirical and not factual." Therefore, we rate this claim as "Labeled Satire." Additionally, the @LyricVault account holder responded in the comments section: "I lied." Moreover, a community note appeared beneath the post linking to a story published by The Guardian that delved into the plot and character development of "Inside Out 2." The article did not reveal any official confirmation from Pixar, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios since 2006, regarding Joy's sexual orientation, nor that of any other character in the film, including primary human character Riley. Per The Guardian: Sexuality is entirely absent in the film: Riley lusts after no one of either gender, and no one ever brings up such a thing. Her girl-crush on the older hockey player is exclusively nervous and aspirational. ... The big secret Remember the big ogre-like lad stashed in the vault with Bloofy, Pouchy and Lance? Who promises "Not yet" when Joy asks what he's harbouring? Some especially wild internet rumours had speculated it might be that Riley is gay – which would have been a striking way for Pixar to out her. Disney news outlet Inside the Magic discussed a new LGBTQ+ character being introduced in the animated sequel, but did not specify that Joy was that character, despite the online speculation: "Disney has not come out noting that Joy is a lesbian." Instead, the article mentioned broader themes of diversity and inclusion being addressed in the film. The satirical claim about the confirmation of Pixar character Joy's same-sex attraction came out after the June 14 release of "Inside Out 2," the sequel to the popular 2015 animated feature "Inside Out," which earned more than $857 million at the global box office. The sequel is set for similar box office glory, having reportedly grossed $334,023,514 worldwide within days of its release. Snopes has previously fact-checked claims about Disney, including the satirical claim that visitors to Walt Disney World Resort can now get on-site colonoscopies, and the true claim that Walt Disney originally named Mickey Mouse "Mortimer." For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.
