  • Fact Check: Singer Sonu Nigam did not tweet in support of Unacademy after recent controversy involving a teacher A tweet by a verified account under the name Sonu Nigam on X (formerly known as Twitter) is viral on social media claiming that Indian singer Sonu Nigam has shared his support towards educational technology company Unacademy, following recent controversy involving a teacher being fired Claim :Singer Sonu Nigam tweeted in support of Unacademy, following recent controversy Fact :Another person with the same name as Sonu Nigam tweeted in support towards Unacademy A tweet by a verified account under the name Sonu Nigam on X (formerly known as Twitter) is viral on social media claiming that Indian singer Sonu Nigam has shared his support towards educational technology company Unacademy, following recent controversy involving a teacher being fired (view here). Several media outlets also reported that the Bollywood playback singer tweeted in support of Unacademy after a video of a teacher being fired for asking his students to "vote for educated candidates”. Bharat Times reported, “Popular singer Sonu Nigam also tweeted his views and thanked Unacademy to terminate the teacher (sic)”. FACT CHECK: We found that the viral tweet belonged to a person named Sonu Nigam whose username was '@Sonunigamsingh'. The account's bio states that he is a criminal lawyer from Bihar. The Instagram account tagged to this account shows a different person with the name Sonu Nigam Singh and not the singer Sonu Nigam. Clearly, this proves that the tweet in support of Unacademy was not posted by the singer. With regard to singer Sonu Nigam, he deleted his X account in April 2017. On 24 May 2017, the singer posted a series of tweets announcing that he would delete his Twitter account. This took place after his controversial tweets on azaan. Through a series of 24 tweets, he announced he was quitting Twitter, citing a lack of respect for freedom of speech. (Read more here and here) Clearly, singer Sonu Nigam has not made any statements about the ongoing Unacademy controversy as claimed. The statement was made by another person with the same name. Thus, the claim is false.
